Scaling (Cleaning)

 A dental cleaning is a procedure which involves the scaling of your teeth. During treatment, time is spent to remove plaque and tartar from below and above your gum line. The time spent on each patient will be determined by the amount of tartar, plaque and stain that is present.

If it has been several years since your last cleaning, additional appointments may be required. 

After a dental scaling is completed a dental hygienist may perform a polish if needed. This involves placing a paste (somewhat similar to toothpaste) on a brush with a spinning head. The spinning motion combined with the paste helps with removing surface staining on the teeth. This also helps with making the teeth feel smoother safter a cleaning.  

Fluoride is a mineral that helps to remineralize the teeth, reduce the change of decay and help with mild teeth sensitivity. At Flossophie, the varnish method is used which means the fluoride is painted directly onto the tooth surface. 

 "Wicked White" Professional Grade teeth whitening service is offered in office. It takes approximately 60-90 minutes and is actually quite relaxing. 

A take-home maintenance whitening pen will also be included which helps to keep them wicked white!

 Teeth sensitivity can be very painful and can be caused by a variety of reasons. For patients with mild to moderate sensitivity, a thin layer of a desensitizing agent can be added to the enamel to strengthen the enamel and stop the transmissions to the nerves. This procedure only take a few minutes and can have long-lasting effects. 

 A dental sealant is a thin plastic coating that can be placed in the grooves of baby or adult teeth. It is typically done on the chewing surface, making it harder for bacteria & food to get stuck in the grooves of the teeth. The aim of a sealant is to decrease the risk of decay in the grooves of your teeth. During this appointment, the hygienist will clean the tooth surface, paint on the sealant material on the teeth and harden.
A dental hygiene assessment will be needed prior to having a sealant done. We also strongly recommend a dental check up within 1 year. 

During an oral cancer screening exam, I will assess the inside of your mouth to check for red or white patches or mouth sores. Using gloved hands, I also feel the tissues in your mouth, neck and throat to check for lumps or other abnormalities. 

Oral hygiene instruction is guidance provided by a dental hygienist to educate individuals on proper dental care practices. It includes personalized techniques for brushing, flossing, and mouthwash use, denture care among other key things. The aim of oral hygiene instruction is to aid patients in developing good oral hygiene habits at home. 

Tooth gems are jewels which are bonded to the enamel of your tooth, usually for aesthetic purposes. We use quality swarovski gems, dental-grade adhesive in order to achieve a well-done finish. Price will vary depending on size and type of gem chosen. 

 Smoking cessation is aimed at helping individuals quit smoking. It involves personalized counselling, recommending cessation strategies as well as providing necessary resources. Smoking is one of the highest risk factors for gum disease and premature tooth loss and so smoking cessation is an integral part of the dental hygiene care process.

The foods we eat can affect our teeth, and by extension our bodies, in  either a positive and negative way.  Nutritional counselling involves guidance on dietary choices for optimal oral health. I will educate patients on how nutrition impacts teeth and gums, helping to lower  theincidence of tooth decay and promote a healthy gums.
